Bagels, Beers and Brew

How F&B challenger brands smashed it through the pandemic.

While the rest of Australia snoozed through LGA lockdowns and 5km zones, a bunch of entrepreneurial challenge brands said, ‘No thanks - we’re ready to rumble.’

Don’t miss the Australian Marketing Institute’s NSW fantastic final fling for the year.

Hear these fabulous movers and shakers tell their story:

  • Peter Brennan (Entreprenur and Brand Whisperer, Non-Alcoholic) - Heaps Normal
  • Joella Richardson (Head of Marketing) - Seven Miles Coffee Roasters
  • Michael Shafran (Founder and ‘Dough Raiser’) - Brooklyn Boy Bagels
  • Nathan Gazzard (Founder - ‘Beers and Boards’) -  Surf Craft Beers

Find out all the good brew from these F&B challengers:

  • Discovering their brand voice
  • Telling their story for cut through
  • Disrupting the crowded F&B market
  • Building brand loyalty
  • Marketing strategy to reach their audience

The speakers will bring delicious samples of their tasty brews and chews as prizes. Some bagels, beers and brew could be your lucky prize — all you have to do is book now. That alone could be worth the price of admission.

We look forward to you joining us and your marketing colleagues for this fantastic opportunity to hear insights from entrepreneurs, network with your peers and enjoy delicious canapes and drinks.

Our panel of speakers:

Peter Brennan - Heaps Normal

Entrepreneur. Brand Whisperer. Non-alcoholic.

Scratching an itch, Pete started Heaps Normal in 2020. Less that two years later, the non-alcoholic beer startup is served in over 4,000 venues around Australia, New Zealand and Asia. It counts some of Australia’s most successful entrepreneurs as it’s investors (the founders of Koala, Linktree, Who Gives A Crap, Milkrun and Adore Beauty to name a few) and has won numerous accolades including being named a Breakthrough Brand in 2021 by Interbrand, winning gold at the World Beer Awards, 2 x Pause Awards, and 2 x Telstra Best of Business Awards.

Pete shares how to start, build or reinvent your business to become a market-leading brand that turns customers into die-hard fans.

Pete is known for having a different point of view, speaking his truth, and providing genuine value to anyone he encounters.

Joella Richardson – Seven Miles Coffee Roaster

Joella is the Head of Marketing for Seven Miles Coffee Roasters, who have been roasting coffee for cafes and consumers across Australia for over 50 years. She joined the business in 2020 and has been trying and failing to improve her latte art skills ever since.

Joella has worked in the marketing & communications industry for 10 years. Before getting into coffee, she worked at leading creative agencies in London and Sydney including Grey and The Monkeys.

She started her career as part of WPP's global team driving Procter & Gamble FMCG brands like Duracell, Pantene and Gillette. On moving to Sydney she shifted to an Aussie brand, and spent 4 years working on Telstra before swapping Telcos for Cappuccinos with Seven Miles.

Michael Shafran – Brooklyn Boy Bagels

Michael is the Founder and ‘Dough Raiser’ of Brooklyn Boy Bagels, an artisan bakery that specialises in making the most authentic New York bagels in Australia. Before launching his business in 2013, Michael had a long career as a professional food and travel journalist in Sydney. His last project was Australia’s first crowdsourced cookbook project, The Melting Pot, a joint venture with Murdoch Books.

About Brooklyn Boy Bagels

Brooklyn Boy Bagels (BBB) is a Sydney bakery specialising in authentic, artisan NYC bagels. It launched in February 2013 as a Sunday pop-up concept within Darlinghurst small bar, Darlie Laundromatic, with a mission of bringing true NY bagels to Sydneysiders.

The business has grown from a simple pop-up in Darlinghurst into an acclaimed artisan bakery serving some of the Sydney’s top cafes and gourmet food stores and 10 farmers’ markets across the city. Upon opening its first standalone bakery in Matraville in November 2014, Brooklyn Boy has also branched out into baking other New York-inspired goods, from a classic NY Del Rye bread to Jewish challah bread, fresh pushcart pretzels and pastries like chocolate babka and more.

Brooklyn Boy’s first retail shop was slated to open in April 2015.

Nathan Gazzard - Surcraft Brewing Co.

We have just launched our company and the first beer to market - Pintail Lager, with our plan to open a surf museum, brewery and cultural destination promoting the great history of the Brookvale Six and the generations that followed out of Brookvale and the Northern Beaches.

Our inspiration comes from the pioneering artisans who founded the Australian surfing industry in the 1950’s, known as The Brookvale Six. Barry Bennett, Gordon Woods, Bill Wallace, Scott Dillon, Greg McDonagh, and Denny Keogh. “These men pioneered the surfboard manufacturing industry in Australia and helped transform how surfing was shaped in Australia and I am thrilled to share their story, so we can revere, have a beer, admire, respect and never forget them or their craft”.

Born and Bred Northern Beaches. For over 20 + years Nathan had been involved in technology sales - Building great trusted relationships, delivering outcome based solutions, digital transformation projects, products and services to large enterprise customers, partners and the public sector.

He has stepped out of the corporate world, taken the leap to follow my passion and dream and started SurfCraft Brewing Co.
